It’s Visit the Zoo Day!

Who Doesn’t Love Visiting A Zoo?

Who doesn’t love visiting a zoo?! Zoos are home to so many different animals and species, it is so fun to walk around and see them all! Zoos have lots of interesting information about the animals to help you learn about them, what they eat, where they live, and so much more!

Did you know that you can do a lot more than just reading and looking at the animals? These are some of our favourite zoo activities!

Touch the Animals

There are some zoos that offer petting zoo areas or special informational lectures where kids may be able to pet and touch some animals. Make sure that you only pet the animals when there is a designated area and you always respect these interesting animals! This is a great way for children to learn about the animals and create a memorable experience.

Feed the Animals

In addition to being able to touch some animals, you may also be able to feed them! Learn what the animals eat and the best ways to give them their food! This is a wonderful learning opportunity for kids, and they get to learn even more about the animals.

Zoo Scavenger Hunt

Want to learn more and increase the fun? Creating a scavenger hunt is a fun way to keep kids engaged and learning while they are at the zoo. You can grab a zoo map and cross out animals as you find them, find animals based on the alphabet, or look for animals based on clues (what an animal eats, where an animal lives, fun facts about them). You could also bring some animal figurines and get kids to take turns pulling them out of a bag. As they get pulled out of the bag, that is the animal they have to find and remember some information about it! You can also be creative and make your own scavenger hunt!

Watch Wildlife Presentations

These are great ways to learn all kinds of information about different animals! Lots of these presentations can also include demonstrations where you get to see the animal eat, do tricks, or other fascinating things. Kids should be encouraged to ask the attendant and their parents questions about the animals.

Take Photos

It is always fun to look back on photos from your visit so your child can remember the animals and their experience at the zoo! Take photos of them with their favourite animals, some informative facts, and especially if your kid gets to touch an animal or be part of a presentation. It can be a fun project to develop some photos and put together a little scrapbook of photos with the information they learned about the animals!
