This month we’ll be flying with Fireflies, crawling with Beetles, and swarming with Gnats.
Fireflies
Fireflies are a part of the Lampyridae family of insects. They produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies, and this light can be yellow, green, or pale red. Fireflies are often found in temperate and tropical climates. They tend to live in marshes or wet, wooded areas.
Beetles
Beetles are found in almost every habitat except the sea and the polar regions. They often feed on plants and fungi, break down animal and plant debris, and eat other invertebrates. Beetles are insects that form the order Coleoptera and they typically have a hard exoskeleton.
Gnats
Gnats can be both biting and non-biting. Most often they fly in large numbers, called clouds. A gnat is any of many species of tiny flying insects in the dipterid suborder Nematocera. "Gnat" is a loose descriptive category rather than a phylogenetic or other technical term, so there is no scientific consensus on what constitutes a gnat.
