Meet our February Specialist

it is our pleasure to introduce…

Each month, we are introduced to a new specialist who knows all about the flora and fauna we are coming across in our expedition crate.

Meet Allan Caberero

Allan Cabrero! Allan is a PhD Candidate with the Will Lab and O'Grady Lab, studying environmental science, policy and management at the University of California - Berkley.

Allan is currently working on his dissertation and is investigating the phylogenomics, metagenomics and diversification of bee flies (Bombyliidae). He is also interested in the taxonomy and species delimitation of bee fly genera.

What’s the best way to help beetles?

Allan recommends that the best way to help beetles thrive is to maintain a natural backyard, beetle hotels, and more that will help beetles. By keeping our environment strong for insects, it’ll help lower the amount of endangered insects.

Why are beetles so important to our planet?

Beetles are important for many different reasons because they do a lot of different things. Fireflies are a type of a beetle, but when we think about the diversity of insects, there's about over 300,000 species of beetles on this planet. Some are important because they break down decay, some are pollinators, some are predatory that keep populations in check. They serve a purpose in all levels of our ecosystem.

Ask Allan anything!

We’re going live on Instagram with our specialist, Allan Cabero! Mark your calendars for March 13th, 2022 at 4:00pm EST! ! You can ask Allan anything you like about beetles, gnats, and fireflies right here on Instagram! We can’t wait to hear all of your itsy bitsy bug, bee, beetle, and insect related questions!

Follow along for more Sneak ‘Peaks’

Each week, we release a new sneak ‘peak’ to explore on our social media, Campfire Club newsletter, and right here on Base Camp!
